Now that we’re heading into the hot summer months in most parts of the United States, I want to talk about why multiple sclerosis symptoms worsen in the summer heat! First described by Wilhelm Uhthoff in 1890 the temporary worsening of vision and other neurologic symptoms when the body is overheated is now known as the Uhthoff Phenomenon or Uhthoff’s symptoms. Our bodies overheat not only from the outside temperature rising, also from fever, exercise, saunas and hot tubs. MS heat intolerance symptoms can result from a very slight rise in core body temperature even as little as one-quarter to one-half of a degree. An elevated temperature further impairs the ability of a demyelinated nerve to conduct electrical impulses. The Uhthoff Phenomenon Uhthoff’s Symptom also referred to as Uhthoff’s Phenomenon was the principal diagnostic test for multiple sclerosis until the 1980′s when more accurate test methods became available. An increase [...]

MyVoice offers independence and reduces stigma Tyler Austin is one of thousands of Canadians who can now speak, thanks to MyVoice, a new technology developed by two University of Toronto students. Tyler, 18, is from Toronto and has cerebral palsy, which affects his muscle control and makes it difficult for him to speak. Until now, he had to depend on pointing to a few words on a board on his wheelchair to express himself. It was frustrating for everyone. “He would throw things on the ground, he would get upset because he could not communicate what he wanted to say,” his father, Eric Austin says. But now a state-of-the-art application on his new iPad has opened up a whole new world, allowing him to independently express his own thoughts and feelings verbally and do things for himself. Tyler taps the tablet, which highlights the words and sentences. Then he’s talking [...]

By the time I could no longer deny my diagnoses of multiple sclerosis I had already read the “Power of Now” by Eckhart Toole however it wasn’t until almost ten years later that had the opportunity to really internalize his teachings. I humbly tell you that a gift that I have been given through this MS experience is spiritual enlightenment. I have learned to surrender to the Now and I have honestly found Joy. “Worldview” is a set of beliefs about the universe and the nature of reality. I am a Christian to the core and I know that eternal truth is eternal truth, no matter what package it’s in. When we study the Divine, we are embarking on a sacred adventure whether it be by studying the Metaphysical, Christian, Buddhist, Hinduism or Asian beliefs. The Glory of God is intelligence, and recognizing the Divine in our lives leads to [...]

By Yvonne deSousa I know I am supposed to eat healthier. I have actually known this for many years. But since my MS diagnosis, eating healthy has become downright crucial. Some even claim that a good diet will help control your symptoms, especially fatigue. This claim is the cruelest of all the MS conundrums I have heard. A nutritious diet takes work, work is exhausting, and therefore, you have to have energy to work at it. But if you aren’t eating well, you don’t have energy. It’s far easier to rip open a bag of chips, take the top off a pint of ice cream, or get in your car for a quick visit to the drive thru, than it is to improve your diet. Having a good diet means you must go to the grocery store to buy fresh produce, stand in the long lines to pay for it, [...]

That appetite awareness exercise that Dawn gave me last week is awesome! At first I procrastinated looking at it because I have this innate resistance to writing about my food intake; comes from many, many years of dieting and having to write down what I eat. Some of you will know exactly what I mean. But this is different, you don’t have to write down what you eat. Instead, you record a number for how hungry you were when you ate; from 1 (“too hungry”) to 10 (“ignored fullness”). You also track how you’re feeling at the time – either positive or negative. Then if you want, you can also add comments about any sensations you felt when you ate or details about how you were feeling. Once I started using it I started paying more attention to just how hungry I really was when I ate. For example, yesterday [...]

“For me, the wheelchair symbolizes disability in a way a cane does not.” – Annette Funicello In 1992, Funicello announced that she had been battling multiple sclerosis, a degenerative neurological disease, since 1987. To assist in fundraising to fight neurological disorders, she founded The Annette Funicello Teddy Bear Company, which markets a line of collectible bears. A portion of the proceeds from these products goes to The Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases. This is her story. Annette was born in Utica, NY. Her mother and father; Joseph, an auto repair shop owner and Virginia Funicello a homemaker, were Italian-Americans. As a child she was very shy, her parents enrolled her in dance and music classes to help her overcome her shyness. She was four years old when her family moved to Southern California At the age of 12 she was discovered by Walt Disney when he attended her [...]
